These stand-alone mansions are a rarity. In most cases, townhouse units are built with touching side walls and go on for block after block. The waterway in the foreground is a canal that is part of a complex and ingenious system.The feat of design and engineering is mind boggling, especially considering that the canals, water gates and locks, salt water intrusion prevention system, canal water flushing mechanism, and bridges were constructed centuries ago using mostly human labor.
