One of my favorite things to do is bicyling or driving on the backroads of Thailand without having any particular destination in mind, often without a map. Here I found myself on a mountain road in Uthaithani province in an area where the villagers are Karen tribal people who migrated from southern China over the generations. They have their own language but their children learn to speak Thai in school. This is way off the beaten path for normal tourism. Some time ago I hired a local young man to take me for a long walk in the forest. It was so wonderful and memorable and I would like to get my children to go with me next time so they can carry me safari style sitting comfortably in a little chamber built atop horizontal bamboo poles.
