I had dinner at a beachside restaurant in Bang Saphan and took this picture standing a few steps from my table.Tourism has grown in this area, though very slowly, and there are no buildings over two-story high anywhere around.
Local residents have opposed expansion of heavy industry here, so when there was a plan to build a new steel factory, strong grassroots opposition developed, and the plan was scrapped. However, a company called Sahaviriya Steel has been doing business in Bang Saphan for many years so that in certain areas, the natural environment has been completely destroyed.
