Cupid's Mischief

I was in my room in Bang Saphan Noi the other night watching a musical video TV program from Laos when along came a song that deserves to be registered in the Guiness Book of World Records for the longest chain of broken hearts. The singer starts by telling the boy-loves-girl-but-girl-loves-another-boy story.
Ho hum, ho hum.
But wait, this other boy loves another girl who loves another boy who loves another girl who loves another boy who loves another girl, and on and on.
What made the song so sweet and delightful is that it's presented forthrightly and in all seriousness with no hint of irony or humor. A parade of wonderfully young and lovely people is seen, each one downcast and in tears.
This chain reaction of unrequitted love seemed endless, making me really want to know if the entire population of young men and women in Laos would become broken hearted and if, heaven forbid, the river of tears would overflow into Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia.
I must have dozed off because I never found out, but maybe that's just as well.
