Prime Location

Fishing villages are often seen in the most beautiful locations along the coast of the Gulf of Thailand. For generations, these villages are situated with shelter and safety foremost in mind, so bays and coves are prime choices because they protect people and their boats from high waves and strong winds.

The pictures show a flotilla of shrimp boats in Tam Thong on the border between Prachuabkhirikan province and Chumporn province.

As can be seen from the conditions of the boats, the concept of maintenance, especially preventive maintenance, has not yet entered the consciousness of most villagers. Except for brand new boats, I have never seen one that is even close to "ship shape".

The same goes for the way the fishermen live and treat their surroundings. They are squatters on public land, so as far as construction of houses and other structures, just about anything goes. Judging from the houses there, the residents are not poor. Some have built impressive looking brick homes with large upstairs verandas to take in the breeze and enjoy the view.

The beach serves as a garbage disposal area for everything - foam, plastic containers, raw sewage. Nature is a diligent garbage collector, for every night the high tide comes in with the moon, washes the garbage away, and buries it under the sand.

The authorities have tried to persuade the villagers of Tum Thong to keep the area clean, but nothing seems to work except one thing. About once every two years, the provincial governor swings by for a quick visit. On that one day, not a single piece of garbage is left to be seen anywhere, and various signs go up to welcome the governor and other dignitaries, and also to boast of Tum Thong's official designation as a "Model Village". About a year ago the village was given cement picnic tables and benches that were placed where the seaview is prettiest. Within months they were all smashed up. I don't know why.
