These well-tended and luxuriant fields of sugarcane I am biking along are just minutes from my house in Banrai.
Once grown, sugarcane is harvested once a year for three to five years, depending on soil condition and care and maintenance.
Being a multiple-year crop makes growing sugarcane a good and fairly low-risk investment. Since the size of the plant heavily depends on the amount of rainfall, there has recently been a trend towards using drip irrigation systems to further boost production.
The results are very impressive (up to 70% rise in yield) but installing drip irrigation on a large piece of land requires substantial outlay of capital.
