Acquired Taste

I took this picture yesterday evening as the sun was setting over the back lot of my place in Bang Saphan Noi. The big and tall tree in the middle (called "sah-toh" in Thai) produces pods with seeds that are considered a delicacy in southern Thai cooking.
Since the tree's upper branches cannot support the weight of a human climber, a monkey is sent up to collect the pods, and if no trained monkey is around, a very long bamboo pole with a sharp blade attached at the tip is used.
People either love to eat cooked sah-toh seeds or they just hate it. That's because the seeds have a pungent and acrid smell and taste bitter. It's definitely an acquired taste. When neighbors want to give me something special, they bring me big bunches of sah-toh pods.
As for coconuts, they are everywhere, but for some reason I can't have any part of the fruit - soft skin or juice - because it gives me fever.
